Product spec sheets reference missile levels and test standards that mean nothing to most property owners. Here's a plain-language breakdown.
Missile levels (often labeled A through E, or referenced by test standard) describe the size and speed of debris a window has been tested to withstand without breaching. Higher missile levels correspond to higher-risk exposure categories — generally, coastal and high-velocity hurricane zones require higher levels than inland properties.
The missile level required for your property isn't optional or a matter of preference — it's set by your location's exposure category under Florida Building Code.

Today marks the anniversary of Hurricane Andrew — the storm that fundamentally changed how Florida builds.
When Andrew made landfall in South Florida, it exposed just how inadequate existing building standards were. Homes built to code at the time still failed catastrophically. The damage was so extensive that it directly led to a complete overhaul of Florida's building code in the years that followed.

Impact performance comes from the glass construction — the laminated layers and interlayer — not the color or coating applied to the surface. A properly manufactured impact window can carry a low-E coating, a tint for solar control, or a specific frame color without compromising its tested rating.
What does matter is sourcing tinted or coated impact glass from a manufacturer whose full assembly — glass, coating, and frame together — carries the certification, rather than adding a coating after the fact to a certified product.
