Obligatory annual post for the first crocus babes to bloom!

Consider this your reminder that Spring is coming but it's still too early to do any serious yard cleanup! Leave the leaves for the native pollinators and other good bugs that are burrowed down for another couple of months!

Gardening has helped me get over my arachanphobia and now I just stare in awe as I discover new arachnids and insects on my property. Here a couple of recent ones!

How about you, do you accept the job our little big friends have in the garden or prefer to keep them out of site and mind?

I've recently started the process to *hopefully* become a Master Gardener. I've taken several horticulture classes over the years, but as a lifelong learner, it just makes sense to keep up with my continuing education! The team has put together some wonderful courses, and I'm loving it so far!

What about you? Have you ever taken any home gardening courses? Do you have any questions about the programs offered here in Nevada?

A bit of a life update.

This summer has been unusually hot and has definitely been impacting this year's plants and garden beds. Last year's new additions (like the first photo) are thriving though!

I finally got back to making compost tea for my veggie beds, started a new compost bin, and will be cleaning out the fridge soon to get some bokashi fermenting to add to the compost and reduce our food waste to zero!

I hope to have the energy to share more of this with you someday. But for now, I am just happy to still be learning and upgrading my garden practices.

Stay safe and curious, my friends!

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of volunteering at local nonprofit with some members of my grad school and alum group. We worked in the front garden, pulling w**ds (gotta love cheat grass) and making sure the cherry trees didn't have any competition in their surrounding soil.

I love seeing the changes around the farm each time I go and wanted to share that they have some exciting projects coming up that could really use volunteers! If you head to their website, you can sign up to volunteer on public volunteer days and help with things like w**ding, planting, moving soil for new garden beds, and helping put up the cover for their third and final hoop house.

As someone who studies food and housing insecurity (that's my Ed.D. work), this group is near and dear to my heart because the produce they grow goes directly to low income individuals and families. They also provide opportunities for financial education, cooking classes, and more with collaboration from a local case worker. I highly recommend checking out their website to learn more and potentially contribute your time or any other resources you believe would be helpful.

Today, I'm thankful for checking off part 1 of a front yard transformation. The front pollinator beds are done and now it's just a waiting game for the seeds to germinate and the seedlings to fill in the space.

The previous owners planted a LOT of invasive trees and bushes so this project has taken us a long time. I had to dig down 6 inches to pull out landscape fabric and rocks in order to amend the soil and take out the remaining roots.

My husband helped significantly by taking out some stumps and cutting back most of the unwanted and unhealthy trees/bushes. The before and after pictures are going to be unrecognizable when we're done with everything, and I'm looking forward to sitting back and enjoying this yard from the front porch now.

Today I am thankful for the opportunity to continue my learning for best garden practices and erosion control.

I don't believe I've ever shared this view of the yard but it really shows how much land we have to work with and slowly transform. I'm really looking forward to it!

I'm going to be starting a new series of posts since some days I am just so dang overwhelmed looking at all of the projects I need to work on. So here's my first post.

Today, I'm thankful for the bits in the yard that continue to surprise me, like this native Palmer's Penstemon. She's covered in little bees now, and I don't remember seeing these bloom last year.

Here's to admiring the little things and taking a moment to breathe amidst the chaos of life.

What are you thankful for today?

This weekend, I started laying pathways by grading and laying down cardboard, which I then soaked and will continue soaking until I have the time to lay out the woodchips. I'm so excited to see this vision of mine starting to take shape. Someday, my yards are going to be beautiful.

Cardboard is a great resource to use to avoid w**ds in the pathways without using w**d barrier which literally chokes out the life sources for our soil. I'll definitely be sharing my feedback for this approach in future seasons. Happy gardening all!

Shout out to the annual Spring Plant Sale! I picked up so many great shade and sunny pollinator plants for my current and soon to be created garden beds for a steal last night! Many of these are native plants and other plants that you won't find at the big box stores.

The Friday night portion of the sale is open to members only, and your membership gets you both a discount at the sale and any hosted arboretum society events year round. Additional benefits of the membership include discounts at local participating partners and free entry into over 300 arboretums and gardens nationally! I highly recommend becoming a member if you're a Reno local and enjoy seeing the beauty of our own arboretum located in Rancho San Rafael Park!

Last week Charlie and I did some major cleanup of the front yard. We took out some fencing and lots of ivy, planted some new flowers, and dug a trench for future erosion control pavers. It still has a long way to go but I love seeing the visual progress!

Next, I need to lay out some paths, move the rocks, and create some wildflower chaos beds for the pollinators. We're a bit behind the rest of Reno's spring season due to our elevation on Peavine so once the tulips, daffodils, crocus, and aliums all die back, I'll be moving the bulbs to the front yard for future pops of color that won't be run down by our dogs.
