Have you been seeing a lot of dead trees around town lately? The invasive Emerald Ash Borer is most likely to blame. Females lay their eggs in holes and small crevices in the bark of ash trees. These eggs then hatch into larva which feed off of the inner bark, killing the trees. Once dead, these trees can pose a hazard to surrounding trees, cars, and even people. W**D OF THE DAY
Creeping Charlie, also known as Ground Ivy, can be identified by its small bluish-violet to lavender flowers and round-toothed edged leaves on long, squared stems that root at the nodes. This w**d prefers moist shaded areas, but tolerates sun very well. It thrives in lawns and around buildings and sidewalks, forming dense mats that can quickly take over a large area. The plant's extensive root system makes it exceptionally hard to eradicate by hand-pulling.

Broadleaf plantain is a perennial w**d with a rosette of oval, broad and flat leaves. The flowers are small, greenish-brown on a dense spike. These flowers contain seeds that are carried by the wind, which encourage quick spreading. Broadleaf plantain does particularly well in compacted or disturbed soils and can survive repeated trampling. It is also able to resist mowing because of its low basal leaves.

Dandelions are a broadleaf perennial that can grow in any soil and love full sunlight. In the early spring, new sprouts will emerge from the taproot, which can be 2 to 3 feet deep in the soil. They grow yellow flowers that mature into white puffballs that contain seeds which spread with the wind. To get rid of dandelions you must kill the entire root, which is why spraying is more effective than hand pulling.
