Quick tip for anyone planning a new driveway this summer:
The thickness of the asphalt isn't what makes it last 20+ years. It's the base underneath.
A 3-inch asphalt surface on a properly compacted, well-graded base will outlast a 5-inch surface laid over soft fill or skipped prep work β€” every single time. The cracks you see in driveways three or four years in? Almost always traceable to a base that wasn't done right.
If you're getting estimates, ask each contractor what they're putting under the asphalt. The good ones will know the answer cold.

"How long is this going to take?"
It's the question every homeowner asks before signing on a project β€” and honestly, it depends on a lot more than people realize. Soil conditions. Site access. Foundation depth. Whether we hit rock. Weather. Inspections.
A typical residential excavation runs 1-5 days. A full basement: 3-5. A simple slab foundation: 1-2. But "typical" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.

Short Answer A typical residential excavation job takes between 1 and 5 days, with most foundation excavations completed in 2–3 days. The exact timeline depends on the size and depth of the excavation, soil conditions, site access, weather, and what happens to the excavated material. Larger projec...

Kings Point, Long Island. Circular driveway installation completed last week.
Removal of the existing surface. Base prep. Two lifts of asphalt. Hand-finished edges against the existing Belgian-block borders.
This is the kind of property where the work has to match the standard of everything around it. We've been doing that work on Long Island since 1989.
