Quick tip for anyone planning a new driveway this summer:
The thickness of the asphalt isn't what makes it last 20+ years. It's the base underneath.
A 3-inch asphalt surface on a properly compacted, well-graded base will outlast a 5-inch surface laid over soft fill or skipped prep work β every single time. The cracks you see in driveways three or four years in? Almost always traceable to a base that wasn't done right.
If you're getting estimates, ask each contractor what they're putting under the asphalt. The good ones will know the answer cold.
