Good coverage of the Senate's passage of Ohio's two-year transportation budget bill. Details many features of the transportation budget including the 6-cent gas tax increase.

The Ohio Senate passed its version of the two-year transportation budget Thursday evening, which would increase the state gas and diesel tax to 34 cents a gallon. But the Senate's version needs to be reconciled with the House's version, which increased gas and diesel taxes higher.

The Ohio Senate voted yesterday for a 6-cent increase in the state gas tax. That's just a third of the 18-cent increase proposed by Governor Mike DeWine and far less than needed to maintain Ohio's roads and bridges.

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio Senate on Thursday voted in favor of a proposal to increase the state's gas tax by 6 cents a gallon, down from the House's planned increase of 10.7 cents a gallon and well below the governor's proposed 18-cents a gallon to maintain roads and bridges. The Ohio House will vote on a state gas tax increase this afternoon. Over the past few days, lawmakers have pushed back on Governor Mike DeWine's request for an 18-cent per gallon increase, offering an alternative plan with a 10.7 per gallon increase.

The plan now calls for a 10.7-cent per gallon gas tax hike, 20-cent hike for diesel fuel and fees for electric and hybrid vehicles.

Governor DeWine's proposal for a gas tax increase in Ohio includes a provision that ties the gas tax to the Consumer Price Index to compensate for inflation. This makes good sense. The current Ohio gas tax of 28 cents-per-gallon has been flat since established in 2005. With no adjustments for inflation, its purchasing power has decreased considerably.

The director of the Ohio Department of Transportation told lawmakers Thursday morning that Gov. Mike DeWine's 18-cents-a-gallon gas tax increase proposal also includes an inflation tool.
