We’re finally looking at sunshine and dry conditions tomorrow! Here’s a look at how much rain has fallen in many Ohio communities since the beginning of August. Of course almost all of this fell in the last 7-10 days.

Plant trees, save lives 🌳❤️

Epimaco Amancio planted a single tree near a cliff in the Philippines, never expecting anything in return. Thirty-five years later, that same tree reportedly stopped a bus carrying 37 people from plunging into a ravine.

When he planted it as a young man, he had no idea it might one day save lives.

We often celebrate good deeds only when they lead to something extraordinary — but how many quiet acts of kindness make a difference without anyone ever noticing?

Do you think people do more unseen good than we realize?

The weather in Central Ohio has been crazy this week, but the rain has been absolutely WONDERFUL for the plants! After having two straight summers & autumns with varying degrees of legitimate drought, you become MUCH more appreciative of the rain, just like these Bumble Bees are appreciating the rain-speckled St. John's Worts in the picture (one bee is actively flying in the top right)

Just FYI, our rain gauge east of Hoover Reservoir in Westerville has clocked-in 6" of rain over the course of the last week 👀 How many inches have you recorded on your garden's rain gauge with these storms? From folks we've talked to, it seems like everyone's are varying quite a bit depending on where you are

Sad news from City of Westerville

A little more background from Marcus, who is a volunteer tree finder for the Heritage Tree Program: this particular White Oak (Quercus alba) was the long-time Grand Champion Heritage Tree, a title given to the biggest overall tree in Westerville regardless of species

It had since been overtaken years ago by other trees that had caught-up & surpassed it, but the Otterbein Cemetery White Oak was a gorgeous monster 🌳 Gone, but never forgotten

After standing tall for generations, the heritage white oak tree in Otterbein Cemetery has fallen due to heavy wind gusts during recent storms. Community members who would like a memento from what’s believed to be Westerville’s oldest tree, can collect small pieces of wood of various sizes from Thursday, June 11 – Thursday, June 18 from dawn to dusk each day on cemetery grounds, located at 175 S. Knox St.

Please note: Limited pieces will be available and a City staff member will not be on site to assist with loading or distribution of wood. Wood pieces will be small enough to pick up by hand.
