This year has been a hectic juggle of life throwing s**t in the fan, trying to keep up, falling behind and pushing projects to the back burner to get work done in the shop. I couldn’t be more appreciative to have a project checked off the list today on something that couldn’t be pushed off any longer - last season this area turned into a mud pit with trucks in and out and that was far from ideal. Shouldn’t be a problem anymore!

Thank you Greg for tackling this for me today, took a huge weight off my chest seeing it complete! I’m super thankful for the community I have around me, goes a long way in my book having people willing to help out like Greg did today.

Hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend!

I’d say we’re ready to whiten a few skulls…

As we kick off another year chasing wild game - I want to bring a bit more to the table with providing information up front on proper care and handling of your harvest that will allow for the optimal outcome with your finished mount. Today I want to chime in about skulls and what you should do in the days between harvesting and dropping it off to your taxidermist if you cannot get it there within a couple days (and it’s pretty simple!).

- freeze the head OR submerge head in a bucket of water if you can’t freeze it. You don’t want your head drying out or ending up spoiling and covered in maggots (not very pleasant for the person on the receiving end to work on). If you let your head sit and rot/dry up, this takes longer to fully clean the tissue off and degrease. Often you will have some permanent discoloration if the head was left out for too long.

Following these simple steps will allow for a better outcome - taxidermists can only do so much when harvests are mishandled.

Happy hunting!

Big shout out to Wayne over at Wayne’s Wood Originals for putting together a custom shelving unit for my plaques to be displayed on and a new sign for my deer hoist!

Wayne does a kick ass job, is easy to communicate with and is a true American patriot! His work went beyond my expectations and the best part of discovering his shop is the fact that he’s a few miles up the road from me! Love supporting another small local business and craftsman on this business endeavor I find myself in.

Thanks again Wayne and go check out his page and give the guy a follow!

One of the greatest feelings in life - being blessed with the opportunity to put food on the table from the land you worked so hard to own. Was able to fill my tag first thing this morning and I couldn’t be more stoked (especially with the workload I’m trying to tackle before deer season hits).

She wasn’t the biggest or scariest bear running around, but that doesn’t change the level of appreciation I have for her or minimize the value the meat. After all - it’s the pursuit of meat that I’m chasing, not bragging rights or ego boosting. She crept through my spot at sunrise, probably coming from her den and heading to the fields to graze, and gave me a perfect clear shot. It was quickl and clean and I couldn’t of asked for a better scenario.

I look forward to a winter full of bacon burger, crock pot chilli and bear tacos - nothing like opening morning food security!

Good luck to all who are getting after it!
