That green tarp is doing real work. It seals the opening while the new foundation, deck and framing go in, so the finished side of the house stays finished. Everything stacked on that deck gets measured, cut and set by hand.

Masonry is the slowest trade on the site and the one everybody sees first. Every course gets set by hand against the line, and the scaffold moves up only when the work below it is right.

Framing day is the one that changes everything.

One morning it is open sky and a stack of lumber. Then the walls go up, the sheathing goes on, and rooms you could only see on paper turn into something you can walk through. Every plate square, every stud plumb. The part that disappears behind the drywall is the part holding all of it up.

The biggest one: stop fighting the house. Old homes have settled into a shape, and the craft is building to that shape rather than to a tape measure.
