Spring/Summer Turf Tips 2017:
* Late Winter & early Spring -Apply a PRE emergent herbicide/fertilizer for crabgrass control. (If the area needs to be renovated/seeded, do not apply to that
area.) Always try to time your fertilizer applications with a rain event to follow or irrigate to water in application. Do not over water! A typical lawn only needs about 1 inch of water per week.
*Do not mow at less than 2.5 - 3 inches in the Spring and Fall. During the stressful times of Summer keep it at 3.0 to 3.5 inches. This will keep the crowns of the plant cooler, encourages deeper rooting and provides more leaf area for photosynthesis during the hot months. Mowing at low heights does not mean that, you will have to mow less and it will make your lawn more susceptible to w**d germination, drought, and wear injury.
*Mid to Late Spring - If the lawn is well established and has a dense stand of turf, apply a POST emergent herbicide/fertilizer. This application needs to stick to the w**d surface, so apply in the early morning while dew is still present or after a rain/irrigation event. This is commonly referred to as "W**d and Feed"
If the lawn is not well established, this would be a good time to aerate and possibly seed those areas. Always purchase a very high quality seed. Contractor mixes or low quality seed is full of undesirables. Seed type will depend on the environment, so make sure you purchase the correct type of seed for your situation. Seeding will require good seed to soil contact, which may require a slit seeder that can be rented. Seeding will also require a "starter" fertilizer. A starter fertilizer is a fairly quick release of N-P-K (Nitrogen - Phosphorus - Potassium) A starter fertilizer will have a high amount of Phosphorus. Apply this starter at the time of seeding and continue to keep this area moist until germination has filled in the area. Another application of the fertilizer, will need to be applied at 3-5 weeks post germination.
*Summer - Late June to Mid July. Apply an insecticide/fertilizer for grub control and feeding. The last 7-8 years, we have not seen a lot of June Beetle/White Grub issues, but better safe than sorry and that trend could change on any given year.
