The attached pages show how each method measures up under the same conditions. (Soils considered are class CL - 28° - 127 lbs / cu ft).

Typical with - shows how surcharge is transferred below wall in cases such as this. This does not mean the loading should not be accounted for. We usually put the surcharge in at the appropriate distance as more of a factor of safety.
