Here's a plant to love or curse depending on your site and space available. Canada windflower, 'Anemone canadensis'. In my gravel driveway it is fine if it creeps out and gets run over. At my client's home it is taking out the formal lawn edge of her cul du sac. Again, NBD.

prairie smoke in heavy dew. Vine against east wall is native grape honeysuckle, "Lonicera reticulata". Hummingbirds and yellow warblers are coming to nectar of flowers as they begin to open and eat insects attracted to that bower next to our dining table.

Celebrating Joan Feldman Plumb birthday today with close friends. Working on a water feature for her gift. It started as a simple mister in a bird bath. Evolved into a stream and waterfall with hidden reservoir. Been dreaming of adding this to our rock garden at the SE corner of our walkout home since shaping the land fall of 2011. Photos to follow

Instead of a bike training ride, preparing for our 250 mile BAM from Lanesboro in 2 weeks, I take cloud photos imagining this is a volcano erupting nearby without the hassles of air and lava. Pavement too wet for our steep hills especially due to gravel on top of asphalt. We were caught in a thunderstorm Saturday nearing the end of a 40 mile ride. Cooled us off. Yet, we had a relaxing swim in Red Cedar River just before a light lunch

The earth is responding to major disruptions of formerly balanced systems that made our home an Eden of diversity. Converting native habitat to human endeavors (homes, work sites, transportation, and agriculture) eliminates wild areas. Larger climate forces have been unleashed by burning fossil fuels. We see the impact in drought, fire, flood, derecho straight-line winds, plagues of insects, and invasive species all overwhelming formerly stable, wild habitat.

One way individual homeowners can help restore that balance is to garden with native plants. These offer critical homes for insects, birds, and other wildlife. The benefits of transforming lawn to diverse habitat include: reduced need for mowing, irrigation, fertilizer, and pest control; while creating lush gardens that look great during drought, require far less weeding and other care, all while offering food, shelter, and nesting habitat for birds and pollinators that are threatened with extinction.

This evening we will cover specific steps to gently transform your lawn to habitat while fitting into current neighborhood expectations. Come with photos & / or sketch maps of what you have in your yard today, along with your dreams for how you would envision your new landscape to look. List the values you want to incorporate.

Be prepared for a lively discussion. We hope to see you there!

Here we are just past 1st quarter moon in mid-July and native gardens are beginning to smoke in the sun. These were installed roughly ten years ago with little maintenance and no irrigation since then

I was digging up invasive/introduced Burnet saxifrage, 'Pimpinella saxifraga' (photo with broad leaves, flowers are open at bottom of raceme) and discovered ten native lily leaved twayblade, 'Liparis liliifolia' (multiple leaflets, roots exposed) growing among the invader. My theory is that the seed of the invader came on a clod of soil from a visitor's boot. Could the twayblade have arrived on the same? They seem to have started near the same edge of the walking path. Both are uncommon in Dunn County, WI.

One of my favorite shrubs is a native alternative to invasive European burning bush. It’s fall color is a more subtle pink vs. fire engine red of winged Euonymus. ‘Euonymus atropurpureus “ is the native, known as Wahoo. It easily lives up to that moniker. Spectacular red fruit in a delicate large, 3-4 lobed, pink capsule. I recommend protecting it from rabbit browsing in winter. I was able to install fence @ one of mine this weekend given our mild weather. Dig wire in several inches. Stake with landscaping spikes between posts keep wire from being pushed around. Grows from sun to shade. Ask for it at your local nursery, but you will probably have to go to Outback near Hastings.
