What you're looking at is hinge wood, specifically the remaining hinge after a tree-felling cut.

When a tree is felled using a conventional directional notch and back cut, the hinge wood is intentionally left between the face cut and back cut. It acts like a living wooden steering joint:

🌲 Controls the tree's direction of fall
Holds the stem to the stump as it starts moving
Helps prevent the butt from sliding or kicking sideways

The fibers bend, stretch, and eventually break as the tree goes over
