Do you know how how your building needs to be spec’d to last?
Here are some of the important parts of constructing a strong building.

C-Purlins-
SIZE SPAN(Up To)
3” C Purlins 10’
4” C Purlins 12’
6” C Purlins 18’
8” C Purlins 25’

Now even based on those spans, the spacing between the purlins is very important.
On 3” and 4” c purlins we like to keep our spacing around 3’ apart.
On 6” c purlins we like to stay between 3’ and 4’.
On 8” c purlins we like to be no more than 4’ apart.

When it comes to wide fl**ge beams (I beams), this is what can really make a big difference.

Wide fl**ge beams are more than just 4x8, 4x10, 4x12, etc…
They also have a poundage to them.
You have 4x8x10 # , 4x8x13 #, 4x12x14 #, 4x12x19 #, etc…
So even when a building is spec’d for a 4x12 beam
(or whatever size beam) it’s also important to know the poundage of that beam to really understand if it is the correct size.
