Prepping for the winter weather coming this weekend? We have a few things to consider as you winterize your ranch.👇

Cattle:
❄️Have accessibility to water, wind breaks and extra feed. Ensure that cattle have ample hay – stock-up now if you haven’t already!
❄️Bedding for bulls and young calves.
❄️Have an updated cattle inventory and consider moving cattle closer.
❄️Harsh weather can stress cows into an early calving period, so be prepared with the proper veterinary supplies.

Equipment:
❄️Fill up diesel with anti-gel to prevent freezing, and check antifreeze levels.
❄️Leave all water sources at a drip. Have troughs filled just below the float.
❄️Insulate exposed water pipes, wrap or bundle with straw.
❄️Consider post-storm needs: starter fluid, propane heater, tools to bust water, diesel treatment, fence repair equipment and replacement parts for pipes/valves if busted.

Ranchers:
❄️Prepare yourself for any amount of time outside with gloves, ear warmers, neck garters and bibs.
❄️Plan for loss of power: easy-to-make meals, back-up for water heaters, double check generators.

Winter weather is coming to NTX this weekend

Stock up on hay to keep your animal’s bellies full, and put some extra out for them to bed down in. Consider putting the bales by something to break the north wind, such as a treeline or side of a building.

Put diesel furl treatment in your diesel truck and equipment

Pick up animal feed, and salt

Fill up your propane cylinders for your grill to cook on if you loose power or a backup heat source

Call your propane delivery company and grg your tank filled

Get a carbon monoxide detector if you use gas heat

Replace air filters for your furnaces to help them run more efficiently

Put a coulpr good size piles of hay around your pond edges in the water. It makes easier access for your animals to get water, without you having to chop ice.

If not sink a metal barrel, in about 12” of water and weigh down with rocks to fill with wood and diesel to burn to keep a water hole open, stake with 2 t posts

If you break ice out of your water trough, shovel or pitchfork the ice chunks out to slow its from refreezing

Dress in layers and don’t forget gloves and hat

Fill up a few gas cans and diesel cans with treated fuel for your equipment or generators
