Cold nights ahead for us all!!
Over the next few days, temps will dip to freezing overnight, which can put stress on your water pipes and gas appliances.
Here isquick checklist you can share with family, neighbors, and especially older loved ones.
Pipe protection checklist
Keep your thermostat set at least 55–65°F or higher, even at night, so interior pipes stay warm.
Let indoor faucets on exterior walls drip a slow stream (hot and cold) during hard freezes to keep water moving. (I know doing anything to make our bills higher stinks but this is REALLY important. Just think of the extra cost as reassurance or peace of mind.)
Open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls so warm air can reach the pipes.
Disconnect garden hoses and cover outside faucets with insulated covers or rags and plastic bags if that is all that is available.
Insulate any exposed pipes in garages, crawl spaces, and attics with foam sleeves or heat tape rated for that use.
Know where your main water shut-off valve is in case a pipe bursts, and make sure all adults in the home can turn it off.
If a pipe does burst, shut off the main water and call a licensed plumber right away to limit water damage.
Gas and heating safety checklist
Have gas furnaces, heaters, and fireplaces checked by a qualified professional if they have not been serviced recently.
Never use a gas oven or cooktop to heat your home; this can lead to dangerous carbon monoxide buildup.
Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from curtains, bedding, and furniture, and do not leave them running unattended.
Make sure you have working smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors, and replace old batteries.
If you ever smell gas (like a rotten-egg odor), leave the home immediately, avoid switches or flames, and call your gas company or 911 from outside.
Check in on older family members and neighbors to be sure their heat is working and set warm enough (around 65°F or higher).
Help them gather essentials: medications, water, blankets, and a simple list of emergency phone numbers by them and their phone.
Make sure pathways are clear and well lit so they are not walking past space heaters, tangled cords, or icy steps.
Be safe out there!
