This Saturday is the Children's Business Fair. The kids set up a booth and sell products they made. It is a great way for them to learn how businesses work. There will be more than 100 kids businesses to check out. Come see us in Bradley Fair. We have done it several years now and I learn something from it every time. It is awesome to see so many kids with great ideas. Check it out. We're in booth #79

Maurice and Karen have a really cool home and I have had the pleasure to work on parts of it many times now. For a long while there was an actual tree growing in a cutout of the concrete slab floor in the living room. This time around I rebuilt their hall bathroom which eventually included the entryway floor. I broke so much concrete with a sledge hammer to remove the floor of both rooms because they were not sound support for a tile floor. It wasn't all back-breaking. I was able to build an awesome custom linen cabinet. Overall this was a great project and I am really looking forward to the next one with them.

I recently finished a master bathroom for Kelly and Suzanne. They have been planning this one for quite a while. I know because I have looked at this bathroom a couple of times in the last few years. There is always going to be a hiccup in the course of a project this size. Minor things along the way, nothing that was the end of the world. All worth it for the result. This bathroom turned out really nice. I don't normally sub out much of any project. Kelly's brother is a plumber and he handled everything plumbing related. It was a relief to hand some of the responsibility off to someone else, but my natural tendency to pick apart other people's work, kept me on alert. I have to say, I did not find much to nitpick. Randy, you did awesome. Kelly and Suzanne, you guys made excellent choices on your bathroom. I hope you love it as much as I enjoyed building it.

I try to learn something on every project. That means taking the time to reflect on what went right and what went wrong. Then come up with strategies to increase the positive and decrease the negative. When an issue happens more than once, I add a new clause to my contract to minimize miscommunication in the future. I do not want to imply something that isn't able to be done. Precise language is very important so we are all happy at the end.

Today I finished a project with MaryEllen. She had a water leak. Repaired pipe, patched drywall, and retexture is all that was needed. As I wrapped up and started to head out, she handed me a box. The way to my heart is through my stomach. I received a handwritten thank you note and some homemade chocolate chip cookies. I am now considering an amendment to my contract that requires baked goods on the last day! Thank you so much MaryEllen. It was a pleasure working with you.

This is why I hired Damien. You all know my attention to detail and my very high standards. Finding someone who thinks like me was a challenge. When I build something that will be covered by sheetrock or other finishes, I still put my all into it. I want anyone in the future who tears it out, to feel bad for doing it. Any project that is done by Butterfly Remodeling, either Damien or myself will be above and beyond industry standards. This is the current project that Damien is working on. This is some exceptionally clean work. It may seem to be just framing, electrical, and plumbing. Tons of work went into this space. It's a shame to cover it with drywall. This is the level you guys will get from us. If we put this much effort into things that won't be seen, think about all the things that we will be judged for because it is in the open.

You guys have either known me for a long time or have had a project built by me. I am in the process of starting an ad campaign. I was asked if I had a company slogan. I have been kicking around some ideas, but nothing official. I wanted to somehow work chrysalis into it or metamorphosis, but they always turned out too long or they don't roll off the tongue. I came up with something simple. I googled the idea and there is a company in another part of the country that use it. Nothing can be totally unique and original. I figured I would ask you all for opinions. I am all about branding and consistency. If I pull the trigger on this, it will be on my advertising, website, trailer, business cards, contracts. I want to be sure. What do you think:

GW and Dianne are simplifying their home with a modern decorating approach, one room at a time. They contacted me for the living room. The fireplace, hearth, surround, and mantle were nice, but were quickly looking out of place with all the improvements happening around the rest of the house. We took all the old out and went for a clean, modern linear fireplace without a surround. No bells and whistles. We just let the firebox speak for itself. This turned out really nice. I hope you guys enjoy it. It may be a few months before that happens. I think this time of year is warm enough!

Today was a great example of two heads are better than one. I knew there would be some water damage repair needed for the current project. After Damien pulled the sub floor, some serious structural issues became very apparent. We put our years of experience together to come up with a plan to fix this complicated issue. I think the problem solving requirements for remodeling is something we both enjoy about this kind of work. The person who made the previous repairs had good intentions and over did the misguided fix. There is at least a one inch dip in the floor over 5 feet. The joists were cut and new ones scabbed in with plywood gussets without any structural support. We now have to add a pier, post, and beam to carry the old floor and hang the new floor from it. Three extra days of very specialized work is going to be needed. On one hand, I'm jealous that Damien gets to do this one. On the other hand, there will be blood, sweat, and tears to get this where it should be. This is a ton of work and when the bathroom is complete, no one will know how much work went into making the floor flat.

Exciting news
Today is the first day in the new phase of my little business. Most of you have asked why I don’t have a helper or someone else working for me. My answer is always the same, I can't find someone to do what I do, like I do. Anyone who has spent any time around me knows that I have very high standards. I am super picky. The search has been very drawn out, but I believe I have found the guy who I can comfortably put in my customer's homes. Today I hired my first employee. His name is Damien. You will be seeing a lot of him and his work in these posts from now on. With the two of us working on seperate projects at the same time, my backlog is going to shrink quickly. I am calling in favors from all my awesome customers and family. Anyone who sends me a referral that turns into a signed contract will receive a $200 Visa gift card or $400 credit towards their next project. This is the start of some really great things for Butterfly Remodeling. We're going to hit the ground running. Get some rest this weekend, Damien. We will rock-n-roll Monday 7:30 sharp!

I recently worked on a bathroom project with Larry and Jan. I did their master bathroom a few years ago and it was a pleasure to work with them again. The other bathroom project gave Larry the inspiration to do some of the projects in their home himself. He does really good work, but the bathroom was a little much. The goal of this project was not to build a magazine picture, spa getaway bathroom. We kept it pretty simple and very funtional. It turned out really nice. There are more projects in the works and I look forward to helping them out in the future, if Larry doesn't take care of them all himself!
