We are well into the winter season ❄️🥶 If you have not upkept your home's heating and ventilation system yet, here are a few tips for basic inspection and maintenance!

✅ Service your furnace - replace/clean air filters every 1-3 months to improve airflow and efficiency.

✅ Clean and inspect ductwork - remove dust or debris from ducts to improve heating efficiency

✅ Clean vent covers and registers - dust and vacuum all registers to ensure proper airflow. Make sure they are not blocked by furniture.

✅ Inspect heat exchanger - a cracked heat exchanger can leak carbon monoxide. Have it inspected by a professional as part of regular maintenance.

Although roofs are strong and durable, any roof can be damaged by bad weather if not taken care of or looked after. Here are some ways to maintain your roof this winter!

1. Remove any snowfall - While it may look gorgeous to have your home blanketed in snow, if it sits too long, it can cause damage. Like ice, snow weighs a lot, and just a few inches can create a heavy load for your roof to hold.

2. Clean your gutters - Coming off the fall season, your gutters may still contain leaves that fell from trees nearby. Make sure they are cleaned to let rain and melting snow flow properly.

3. Fix your flashing - Flashing can quickly come loose or warped after a few years, even if properly laid. Broken flashing can allow snow and water to enter your roof, leading to potential leaks inside the home.

4. Keep an eye on your attic - The state of your attic is directly linked to the condition of your roof. Ensure there are clear routes for ventilation and that your insulation is working as it should.

Now that Winter is in full effect, it's important to protect your house's pipes! When temperatures drop below freezing, water in pipes can solidify and expand, putting immense pressure on the pipes. This can cause them to crack or burst, leading to water damage!

Here are some ways to prevent this from happening.

❄️ Allow a slow drip from faucets connected to exposed pipes during extremely cold nights.

❄️ Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around pipes.

❄️ Shut off the water supply to outdoor faucets and drain them completely.

❄️ Use foam pipe insulation to insulate pipes (consider heat tape for extreme cold).

❄️ Seal any gaps or cracks with caulk or spray foam to keep cold air out.

❄️ Drain any other pipes that won't be used during the winter season.

It's almost time for Santa to come down the chimney! But is your chimney and fireplace ready for him? Here are some maintenance tips to ensure your fireplace is Santa approved and safe.

🔥 Have a certified chimney sweep clean your chimney so it's free of any buildup to improve airflow
🔥 Check the damper to be sure it is free of debris so it can open and shut properly
🔥 Clean the firebox to prevent soot and creosote from clogging and potentially causing fires you don't want
🔥 Clean the glass with a non-abrasive glass cleaner and a crumpled piece of newspaper
🔥 Burn clean wood only. Don't burn garbage, rolled newspaper, charcoal, plastic, or chemically treated or painted wood
🔥 Test your smoke detectors and replace the batteries as needed. It's also a good idea to have carbon monoxide detectors
