American dog ticks are one of the most common tick species found across Kansas, with adults most active from April through July.

They prefer open, grassy areas and will readily attach to both people and pets. They are known carriers of Rocky Mountain spotted fever and tularemia.

After any time outdoors, do a full-body tick check. Ticks typically need several hours of attachment before disease transmission occurs, so early removal matters.

Keeping grass trimmed and placing a wood chip or gravel barrier between your lawn and wooded areas can help reduce tick habitat around your home.

Barn swallows may be messy neighbors, but they’re incredibly beneficial birds that help control mosquitoes and other flying insects. Their mud nests are commonly found under porches, barns, and overhangs this time of year. Did you know that many birds, including barn swallows, are federally protected, so active nests with eggs or babies cannot legally be removed.
