Cami Ewing chose chaos at today’s staff lunch — and we loved every minute of it.
Her presentation, “Can YOU Read Scott’s Handwriting?”, challenged the office with increasingly difficult decoding levels and produced plenty of laughs along the way.
After nearly a year of sitting beside Scott Ramser, she’s apparently become fluent enough to turn it into a game. Now the real question is: who’s getting roasted next month? Stan Landwehr Luke Scott Kenna Hibbs Joe Perez Ralph L Flanagin Amber Michaud Steve Hofhine

Last week, members of the WDM team stepped out to celebrate community leadership at the Wichita Regional Chamber of Commerce 2026 Honors event.

Amber Michaud, Assoc. AIA, Cami Ewing, Assoc. AIA, and Stan Landwehr, AIA, joined fellow attendees for an evening highlighting the people and stories shaping Wichita. As Stan shared, “there were some inspiring stories shared by the Honorees,” a sentiment that captured the tone of the night.

For Cami, the event marked a memorable first: “I enjoyed getting out to attend a local event, as it was my first. It’s impressive to see how many people in this town are willing to come out and make connections while learning about achievements within the community.” She added that while the tornado warning added a little excitement to the evening, the highlight was “watching the videos made for all of the award recipients (… and the food we ate).”

Between reconnecting with peers, making new connections, and even snapping a photo alongside mounted Wichita Police Department officers, it was a night that reflected the strength and spirit of our community.

We’re proud to be part of a city that shows up, celebrates one another, and continues to move forward together.

Three photos, one shared passion: preserving the places that bring communities together.

This week, WDM Architects principals Stan Landwehr, AIA and Luke Scott, AIA joined Danielle Schmidt in Concordia for the quarterly meeting of the Kansas Historic Theatre Association—hosted inside the beautifully restored Brown Grand Theatre. Built in 1907 and inspired by Ford’s Theatre (where President Lincoln was shot), the space is a powerful reminder of how historic architecture continues to shape cultural identity.
A highlight of the visit was hearing from Amy Lange, Concordia, Kansas City Manager, who shared how partnerships between cities and nonprofits can revive historic theaters—boosting tourism while strengthening local arts communities.
WDM’s involvement with KHTA is rooted in that same belief. From WDM’s ongoing work at the Wichita Orpheum Theatre and Midland Theater in Coffeyville, to finished projects at the Fox Theatre Fox in Atchison, and Richardson Auditorium at Southwestern College in Winfield, our team is committed to preserving these irreplaceable spaces.

A big "thank you" goes out to Melissa Swenson, Executive Director of the Brown Grand Theatre, for hosting the meeting and giving us a fascinating guided tour.

Because when we invest in historic theaters, we’re investing in the stories, culture, and communities they continue to serve.

At WDM, we see historic preservation and adaptive reuse as one of the most impactful sustainability strategies available—the greenest building is the one already built. Many historic buildings were also designed with climate in mind—featuring high-mass walls, strategic daylighting, and natural ventilation. At the Orpheum, we’re building on those inherent efficiencies while integrating modern systems to enhance performance for the future.

Happy Earth Day! Restoring the historic Orpheum Theatre isn’t just about preserving the past, we’re also using it as an opportunity to build a more sustainable future. This includes incorporating materials and systems such as:

✅ Fly ash used in concrete offers enhanced durability and reduces material waste, which reduces the carbon footprint.

✅ Salvaged lumber gives new life to original materials while honoring the theatre’s historic character.

✅ Energy-efficient LED lighting cuts energy use and long-term operating costs.

✅ Advanced HVAC system controls improve comfort and use energy more efficiently behind the scenes.

By blending historic preservation with smart, sustainable choices, the Orpheum Theatre restoration balances respect for history, while embracing a forward-thinking approach. Thank you to Eby Construction Company for their partnership and stewardship in these efforts and the project as a whole.

Big moments for small communities 💛

We were honored to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Solomon Valley Transit Facility in Beloit, Kansas—a project more than 15 years in the making, according to Leanne Eilert of Mitchell County Hospital Health Systems.

For our team, this one hits close to home.

“Coming from a small town myself, I could really appreciate how meaningful this moment was for everyone.” — Nikki Wilken, Assoc. AIA

Projects like this are why we do what we do. At WDM, we seek out work that truly matters—places that strengthen communities and make a lasting impact.

“This project feels especially close to my heart… it’s full of firsts for me, and I’m so excited to see everything come together, especially for a small community like this.”

Here’s to new beginnings in Beloit—and to the people who will be served here for years to come.
