Thank you N. Hixson for another successful deck renovation opportunity. This larger deck was about a year away from falling in on itself. Rot and carpenter ants did their number. We replaced the rotted joists, replaced multiple rotted out beams, built all new hand railing, all new stairs, rubber flashed all structural elements, and built a custom gate. These homeowners have a toddler, so upon request we also installed PVC coated hog wire in addition to the 4” spaced balusters.
If properly maintained, this deck should last a long, long time.
TIPS
1. Don’t forget to pressure wash your deck at least every couple of years to remove algae and outdoor elements that rot wood. Do it every year for decks that back up to forests or other high moisture areas.
2. Don’t forgot to keep an eye on your sealant/stain. Solid stains last longest and work best. If you can see wood through your sealant, re-stain that area to reduce moisture and fend off rot.
