For Nov 1 26
This is our first championship week of the Fall 2026 season – Cross-Country runners were very busy in conference title chases and we’re happy to tell you who did what. Soccer is winding down, and we’re waiting to see what Finger Lakes Community College is going to do on the national volleyball stage in the next two weeks.
Our basketball and wrestling coverage begins next week, something else to look forward to.
Appreciate all our local athletes who have done their best this fall…
SOCCER
Alfred State College women’s soccer took on sixth-seeded Buffalo State in the first round of the SUNYAC Conference playoffs on Wednesday. The Pioneers dug a deep hole in the first half while the Bengals scored four goals to Alfred’s none.
Sophomore striker Isabella Hoffman (Gananda) woke up the Pioneer offense in the 63rd minute, scoring the first Alfred goal (her 14th of the season), assisted by Regan Curabba. The Pioneers would add one more score, but so would Buff State, and the Alfred season came to a close, 2-5.
Isabella had launched four shots during the game, putting three on goal. The Pioneers pack up the practice bags with a 7-7-2 record (3-4-1 SUNYAC); Isabella led the team in goals (14) and assists (5) and points (33). Alfred State will be a team to fear next season.

Gannon College women’s soccer will play on after downing Clarion University on Wednesday, 2-1. Freshman defensive starter Sydney Howard (Wayne Central) played the whole game; she did not have the opportunity to take a shot.
The Golden Knights have a 13-2-3 record (12-2-2 PSAC) and are the No. 2 seed in the Western Division of the Div II Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. They have a first-round bye and will host Shepherd University, the three seed from the Eastern Division, on Tuesday night.

Abby Sanzotta (Red Creek), a junior midfielder for Greensboro College soccer, scored a goal and made an assist to help push the Pride past William Peace College on Thursday, 5-0. That win locked up the third seed for Greensboro in the USA South Conference playoffs, which started Saturday.
She was active in the scoring from the outset, coming off the bench and assisting on Addison Self’s goal in the 29th minute, to start the onslaught. With an assist from Lila Shortell, Abby got her score in the 38th minute, giving Greensboro a 2-0 lead.
When the playoffs began Saturday, Greensboro was teamed against the sixth-seeded Avenging Angels of Meredith College and grabbed a 2-0 win to advance. Abby again entered the game off the bench and played 46 minutes but did not attempt a shot. Greensboro is 10-4-5; Abby has four goals and eight assists.
Next up for Greensboro is a conference semifinal match with the 12-1-5 Brevard College Tornadoes.

Le Moyne College women’s soccer had one game during the week, losing to Central Connecticut State, 0-1. Sophomore midfielder Ella Lathrop (Gananda) only saw the field for 15 minutes, but she got off a shot. The Dolphins are 5-11-1 (4-3-1 Northeast Conference) with two games left on the regular schedule.

A week ago, the women of Maine/Farmington soccer won their first game of the season, and freshman striker Vivian Bishop (North Rose-Wolcott) blasted her first collegiate goal to help in the effort.
Though the Beavers looked like they were in their last gasp despite the win, they miraculously rose to smite Maine/Presque Isle on Wednesday, 1-0, and land themselves in the North Atlantic Conference playoffs with a 2-13-2 record (2-5-0 NAC).
And who did the smiting of Presque Isle?
Vivian! She struck in the 48th minute, assisted by Makenzie Rushlow, who floated a long through ball close to the goal that Vivian one-timed into the corner of the net. Oh, the joy and rapture of a two-game winning streak!
Now the Beavers were in the deep end of the pond, playing third-seeded Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday night.
Did Vivian have some magic left in the moonlight of Halloween night? After all, she had single goals in the last two games – her first goals of the season…
Alas, while she had enough magic to fire two shots, but the Beavers lost to Maine Maritime, 1-3, and the curtain closes on the Maine/Farmington schedule with a 2-14-2 record.

Roberts Wesleyan women’s soccer entered the East Coast Conference playoffs Wednesday as the No. 4 seed, playing fifth-seeded D’Youville. The Redhawks scored a single goal in each half, working out a 2-0 win over D’Youville. Freshman forward Lauren Schmeelk (Williamson) came into the game off the bench and got more playing time than any other sub.
Next for the Redhawks was a semifinal meeting with top-seeded Mercy College on Saturday and the game was decided by one goal – Mercy’s. Lauren got into the game for 41 minutes but did not offer a shot. Roberts puts everything away for next year with an 8-4-6 record.

Stetson University women’s soccer ended its season this week with some asterisks. For instance, the Hatters traveled to beat Jacksonville last Sunday, 3-2 – a team they lost to, 2-1, two weeks ago, when the Hatters were home. The win over Jacksonville was just the third win for Stetson this fall.
On Saturday, the Hatters had senior Clare Boesel (Pal-Mac) in goal, the primary starter for the team. She saw three shots come from Florida Gulf Coast University and stopped two of them. Her teammates managed a total of one shot, and the Hatters fell in the finals, 0-1. Stetson ends the season 3-14-0.

The University at Buffalo women’s soccer hosted Kent State on Thursday in the Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness game. The Bulls lost, 1-2. Junior midfielder Maya Ikewood (Pal-Mac) started for Buffalo but did not attempt a shot. UB is 4-7-6 (1-5-4 MAC).

Keuka College volleyball lost both of its final games over the weekend, bowing to Russell Sage on Friday, 0-3, and to Hartwick College on Saturday, 0-3. Nazareth University volleyball is blossoming with a four-game win streak after working past Oswego State on Tuesday, 3-1, and nudging Utica on Friday, 3-2. Senior Golden Flyer setter Anna Malbone (Wayne Central) had 16 assists and six digs against Oswego and did even better against Utica with a kill, 22 assists, two service aces and four digs – one of her best performances of the season.
The Golden Flyers had one more game before the break leading up to the conference tournament, a Saturday afternoon meeting with SUNY Polytechnic.

SUNY Polytechnic volleyball played three games during the week and lost them all – 1-3 to St. Lawrence University on Tuesday, 0-3 to St. John Fisher on Friday, and 1-3 to Nazareth on Saturday. Junior outside hitter Kara Stephens (Lyons) played in the St. Lawrence game, smashing one kill and making five digs. The Wildcats end their season 3-24.
BOWLING
Roberts Wesleyan bowlers placed sixth in the Niagara University Brunswick Fall Invitational last weekend. The Redhawks had a rough first day of the tournament, going 1-4 in traditional matches. But on Sunday, Roberts turned things around and went 3-1 in the Baker scoring.
On Sunday, the Redhawks were off to a fast start with an 855-801 win over Penn State/Behrend and a 917-746 dominance over Hilbert. Roberts then lost to Le Mopyne, 875-898 and finished with an 833-817 win over William Smith. In the final round in Baker fashion, Roberts beat Daemen 204-200 to claim sixth place.
SWIMMING
William Smith College swimmers and divers took their second dual meet in a row on Friday, besting Alfred University, 181-115. Heron senior Bria Romano (Lyons) swam the second legs of the fourth-place 200 medley relay (2:07.65) and the fourth-place 200 free relay (1:59.73), and also came in fourth in the 50 breaststroke (37.99) and fifth in the 100 free (1:09.49).
FOOTBALL
I wish I were making this score up. Cortland State, ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III, beat Alfred State 80-7 on Saturday night. That’s 11 touchdowns for the Barons. Cortland pushed 42 points across in the second half.
Why?
Too many questions.
For the Pioneers, sophomore wide receiver Marcus Asberry (Lyons) got into the game but did not record any stats. Alfred State is 5-3 (2-3), starting its season by winning four of its first five games.

Alfred University is on a three-game losing streak after getting pummeled by Brockport State on Saturday, 3-28. Sophomore linebacker Jacob Maier (Pal-Mac) made three solo tackles for the Saxons, who are now 2-6 (1-4 Empire 8).
HONORS
Corning Community College volleyball middle blocker Kayla Bellefontaine (Marion) was named the Red Barons' Athlete of the Month after a strong, consistent effort at the net. A sophomore, she led the team with 19 total blocks, including 13 solo blocks and six block assists. She averaged 0.86 blocks per set and appeared in all 22 sets across the Red Barons' six October matches.
Kayla also contributed offensively, recording 26 kills and a team-best .220 hitting percentage. She averaged 1.18 kills per set and finished second on the team with 42 points, providing Corning with production on both sides of the net. She added four digs over the month.
Her presence at the net helped anchor Corning's defense, which held opponents to a combined .115 hitting percentage in October. The Red Barons went 3-3 in six matches with wins over Mohawk Valley Community College, Herkimer College, and Union College (NJ).
Kayla’s efficient attack and team-leading blocking made her a key contributor to the Red Barons' October efforts and earned her recognition for her impact on SUNY Corning women's volleyball. Corning’s season ended with an 8-13 record. Kayle moves on to the basketball team for the winter.
