This sounds a bit ominous. From my recent AI chat…

“You’re starting a true full-scope restoration: structural, envelope, masonry, roofing, finishes, and historic fabric. The only way to keep a project like this from swallowing you whole, is to impose a structure that’s stronger than the chaos you’re about to uncover.” 😳

I have a restoration buddy in my upcoming project. This is a juvenile vulture recently hatched out. Be warned, these things growl and they will freak you out if you don’t know they’re there.

This is the part where I learn a tornado hit my restoration project in 1853, 1923, and Yankees tried to burn it in 1864.

Something to think about.

“Builder grade” is not a certification. It is not an industry standard. It means one thing: the minimum quality required to legally transfer the deed and end...

An “Old Timers” trick…

This is the main lower rail for the southwest balustrade. Unfortunately, a bow has developed. 🫤

So, what to do, what to do? 🤔

I know! Once again knowing some history saves the day! 😃

Years ago when something like this would happen, the woodworker would wet the concave side of the bow and set it in the sun, wet side down. The heat from the sun gently draws the moisture upward through the fibers and straightens out the wood. I’ve used this technique several times with success on single pieces. This however, is a 3 inch thick glued rail 99 inches in length. Plus it’s cloudy today. We’ll see. I really don’t want to remake this rail.

The final stages. Installing the profile molding on the top rail. 🙂

In light of all the development in Maury County lately and the recent bullet we dodged with Mount Pleasant, I thought this video timely and that it might be of interest and an eye opener to a lot of average people that may not understand how a house that once took a year to build now rises from the dirt in 4 to 6 weeks. Just by way of qualification, my historical interest extend beyond saving battlefields. I’m a licensed contract of historical trades. It’s what I do. For me, I will always say “older is better”.

If you bought a new construction home in the last two years, you didn't buy a house. You bought a 30-year mortgage on a product engineered to rot in 15.We ar...
