The controversial decision was made by the event's new president.

In 1952, a group of North Dakota farmers made national news when they stood up against what they viewed as an unjust eviction. A local sheriff had arrived to repossess the property of a widow named Mrs. Nelson on behalf of an insurance company, but her neighbors refused to let it happen. The farmers surrounded the sheriff, declared the land protected as a “widow’s homestead,” and detained him until he agreed to leave. The tense confrontation became a rare instance of a rural community openly defying legal authority to defend one of their own.

The incident revealed deep resentment toward banks and foreclosures in the post-Depression era, when small farmers were still fighting to keep their land. Acts of resistance like this were part of a larger wave of rural populism across the Midwest, where communities often banded together to oppose foreclosures they viewed as immoral. Though the sheriff was released unharmed, the farmers’ “arrest” of him became a striking symbol of solidarity—and a reminder of how far ordinary people would go to protect their neighbors from losing everything.
