A little piece of electrical history came home with us today.

One of our amazing customers gave us this old Trumbull Electric motor starting switch, and we couldn’t help but appreciate how far the electrical trade has come.

Trumbull Electric Manufacturing Company began building electrical equipment in Plainville, Connecticut all the way back in 1899. This old 3-pole motor switch was built for serious industrial service, rated up to 600 volts, and represents a time when electrical equipment was made heavy, simple, and built to last.

As electricians, we spend most of our time installing the newest equipment and bringing older electrical systems up to modern standards, but every once in a while it’s pretty special to hold a piece of the history that helped build our trade.

A huge thank you to our customer for giving this to us. It’ll definitely have a place in the Eel River Electric collection.

As the weather starts to cool down, many of us will be pulling the space heaters back out. Before you plug one in, Eel River Electric wants to remind everyone that space heaters are one of the highest electrical loads you can plug into a standard household outlet.

A typical space heater can draw around 1,500 watts — roughly 12.5 amps on a 120V circuit. That’s a significant continuous load, especially in older homes or on circuits already powering lights, TVs, appliances, or other devices.

A few important space heater safety reminders:

🔥 Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet. Never use an extension cord, power strip, or surge protector. These can overheat under the sustained electrical load.

⚡ Whenever possible, use a dedicated circuit. A space heater sharing a heavily loaded circuit can lead to nuisance breaker trips, overheating connections, or expose weaknesses in older wiring and receptacles.

🔌 Check the outlet and plug regularly. If the plug, cord, or outlet feels unusually warm or hot, smells burnt, looks discolored, buzzes, or fits loosely — stop using it and have the circuit inspected.

🏠 Older electrical systems deserve extra attention. Worn receptacles, loose connections, backstabbed wiring, and aging electrical equipment may not handle heavy loads as reliably as they once did.

And remember: never leave a space heater running unattended or while sleeping, and keep it away from curtains, furniture, bedding, and other combustible materials.

A space heater may be small, but electrically it’s a big load. Taking a few precautions can help keep your home and family safe this fall and winter.
