As many of you probably already know, my father and founder of Willow Park Air, Tom, passed away after a battle with cancer in early February.

I am incredibly grateful to have had him as a boss all these years and for the opportunity to learn under him for nearly two decades. My dad officially created Willow Park Air in 1996 while still employed at Lockheed Martin. I started working for him in 2003, starting off as a basic helper. Over the next 18 years, we had the pleasure of being a father and son team, giving our customers a unique offering of skilled service coupled with a small, family owned business vibe.

Now that he is gone, I have to look to my future and do what's best for my customers, as well as myself. After much deliberation, I have decided to allow Willow Park Air to merge with Burke Mechanical, another trusted HVAC company serving the same area of operation. I will be working for them as a service technician and they are committed to allowing me to continue serving my customers just as I would under the banner of Willow Park Air. The service and honest approach to things will not change, but only improve with the support of a fully established company behind me.

The transition will happen this Monday. My cell number will be the same, so never hesitate to call me directly, or call Burke's office for scheduling. If you call the office, be sure to tell them you're a Willow Park Air customer!

The contact info for Burke Mechanical will be in the first comment of this post. I look forward to continuing to be your HVAC and refrigeration guy. Give us a call today!

If you own a house or business with central air conditioning, especially systems that are older than about 5 years, you should educate yourself on the phaseout of HCFC-22 refrigerant, commonly known as R-22 and often referred to as "freon".

If you own a system that uses this refrigerant, as a majority of people with central AC do, this directly affects you. The EPA is forcing the HVAC industry to 'phase-out' R-22 due to it being an ozone depleting chemical as well as a green house gas. The refrigerant that is replacing it as the industry standard is R-410a.

Where this can become a huge headache for homeowners is if their equipment either has the compressor fail or has a system form a refrigerant leak. Due to this phaseout, either one of these scenarios can lead to a homeowner having no option but to replace the entire system. For the most part, R22 equipment is no longer being made and the price of refrigerant has increased by about 300% from about 4 years ago and gets more expensive everyday. I have hear rumors that by next year it will be twice as expensive as it is today. There are HVAC companies out there charging 100$ a pound (Our current price is 80$/lb). So, obviously, adding more R22 to a system with a leak has become astronomically expensive as systems hold anywhere from 4 to 20 pounds of refrigerant.

The link included is straight from the EPA. Anyone with questions can contact me.

Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) are chemicals that are mainly used as refrigerants. To protect the Earth’s protective ozone layer, the United States is phasing out a common refrigerant known as HCFC-22 (also known as R-22), along with other chemicals.

It's officially hot. How's the air conditioning holding up?

Starting to get warm out there...

The price of R22 refrigerant has doubled in the last month. If you have ever had to add refrigerant to you system because of a leak... it just got twice as expensive to simply recharge your system.

This is due to the phaseout of 22 and the recent move by the EPA to speed up this phaseout and greatly reduce the amount of 22 that can be produced. That is why the price went up, supply and demand.

So, if you know you have a system with a refrigerant leak, the price of maintaining your equipment just doubled. The only alternative is to locate and fix the leak (this is usually not an option, as most leaks form in the evaporator coil and can not be repaired) or replace the entire system with a total cost of around 6-8000 dollars. (new systems use R410a refrigerant).

The EPA's intentions are good(R22 is very damaging when it escapes into the atmosphere), but the end effect is many people will not be able to afford to maintain their systems as they have been over the years.
