When safety matters most, preparation makes all the difference.
Recently, in a powerful demonstration of inter-agency collaboration, Stonyfield graciously opened its doors to host a multi-agency emergency response training scenario involving the Town of Londonderry, NH Fire Department, RPH Life Safety Consultants and ARC Mechanical.
The focal point of the drill? Practicing unified command—a critical protocol that ensures a coordinated response during real emergencies.
The scenario involved an active ammonia leak inside the engine room, with one facility employee reported down. Stonyfield personnel initiated the call, investigated the situation, and were quickly joined by LFD upon arrival. Londonderry Fire performed a rapid risk-benefit analysis and determined it was safe to enter for a rescue. They conducted an emergency decontamination and transported the victim for medical care.
Shortly after, ARC Mechanical joined the unified command and was informed of ammonia levels nearing 900 PPM. Our technicians, recently refreshed in HAZMAT protocols, suited up in Level A chemical protective gear and located a leaky valve fl**ge. Working under backup support from LFD, they successfully isolated and mitigated the leak.
This drill was a clear reminder of the importance of:
· Clear initial communication between facility staff and emergency responders
· Rapid transition into unified command
· Shared technical expertise between public responders and private technicians
· The value of cross-agency training and preparation
These efforts ensure that when real incidents happen, everyone knows their role, communicates effectively, and responds with precision.
Huge thanks to Jim from RPH Life Safety Consultants for facilitating this drill and organizing another well-executed scenario!
