๐ŸŒพ We love Solidago!

Mt. Cuba Center () has recently published, "Solidago for the Mid-Atlantic Region," a research report detailing the trial of 70 different species of goldenrods (Solidago).

This herbaceous perennial is a keystone plant with extraordinary benefits to our local biodiversity. From woodlands to sand dunes, they can be found in a wide range of habitats. Goldenrods are a highly adaptable and easy to maintain plant that shines in a naturalistic garden.

We love seeing little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) planted en masse. While blue during the warmer months, it's copper color persists throughout the winter, making it a stunning choice for a naturalistic landscape. ๐ŸŒพ

This quote feels like it was made for us. ๐ŸŒธ

There's something about working with living things, watching ecosystems rebuild themselves, seeing a design come to life over seasons; it never gets old. Gardening teaches us patience, humility, and the art of working with nature instead of against it. At Ellie's Garden, our work allows us to stay grounded in a fast-moving world.

While non-native shrubs stand bare in the winter, native trees and shrubs are teeming with life. Take Ilex opaca for example, which provides winter berries for birds, breaks harsh winds, creates protected nesting sites, and shelters overwintering insects in the litter beneath.

We're proud to help cultivate the next generation of green thumbs right here in our neighborhood! This month, we partnered with to install custom raised beds and trellises for their students and community members.

This hands-on learning space will give students the chance to learn about native plants, dig in the dirt, and enjoy the fruits (and veggies!) of their labor. Watching kids experience the magic of gardening is exactly why we love what we do. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿฅ•

You don't have to compromise on beauty when choosing a native plant for your yard! Many native shrubs, such as oakleaf hydrangea (Hydrangea quercifolia), smooth witherrod (Viburnum nudum), witch alder, (Fothergilla gardenii), and red chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia) provide rich color and texture well into the fall. ๐Ÿชพ

At Ellie's Garden, we like to think beyond summer blooms and design for all seasons, so that our clients, as well as the local wildlife, are able to find solace year-round.

While it is tempting to tidy everything up this autumn, cutting back stems and clearing debris as our gardens prepare for the colder months, Ellie's Garden reimagines our fall cleanups. Simply leaving up seed heads on Echinacea purpurea, or refraining from cutting dead Amsonia hubrichtii stems will provide invaluable habitat and nutrition sources for wildlife. Additionally, fallen leaves, hollow stems, and lone seedheads enhance winter beauty and structure. ๐ŸŒพ

Amsonia tabernaemontana, also known as Eastern Bluestar is a robust herbaceous perennial that provides several months ornamental interest. A spring show of light blue flowers gives way to spectacular gold leaves in autumn.

In addition to being an easy plant to maintain, it is also an exceptional habitat and food source for bees and hummingbirds. ๐Ÿ‚
