Our recent deck build with access door and bench in Wardaboro. 6 - 48” deep footings should keep this in place and level until they are ready for something new in a few decades. Vermont has a deeper frost depth than the states further south. As such we have seen a lot of shifting and heaving of the footings. When we are contracted to repair these issues we typically find improper/shallow footings. Digging them to the proper depth of 48 inches (or lower) has prevented these issues in our builds. The green mountains are an interesting place to excavate. The rocky soil makes four feet feel like a mile.
