Lawns: Dry Patch

Dry patch of lawns occurs when the soil in certain areas becomes water-repellent. As a consequence the grass suffers from severe drought, even in wet weather. The result is the appearance of patches of dead grass, with the soil proving very difficult to re-wet.

If dry patch develops it can be very difficult to re-wet the soil, but the following may help:

-Spike the area densely, and attempt to apply some water each day for a few days (don’t overwater as it will just run off)
-Consider applying a wetting agent
Repeat the treatment once a month for 3-4 months
-In severe cases that do not respond to treatment, the affected turf plus 8-10 cm (3-4") of soil may need to be removed, and the soil replaced before re-seeding or re-laying with fresh turf

2: Boiling Water-Using boiling water to kill w**ds is another inexpensive and easy way to battle them. Heat water in a kettle and then pour it over the w**ds

3: Mulch/Ground Covers

4: Cornmeal Gluten-Sprinkle some cornmeal gluten, often called corn gluten meal, in areas you want to keep free of w**ds. The corn gluten inhibits seed germination. Just don’t use it in your garden when you have vegetable seeds planted or they won’t sprout either.

5: White Vinegar-White vinegar is a great w**d killer. Pour some into a bottle and sq**rt away. It removes the protective coating on the leaves of plants so they die.

6: Lemon Juice- ACIDIC

7: Poultry Pointers- Chickens can provide very effective w**d control. Let them have free-range in the garden before the planting season and after the last harvest to help rid your garden of w**d seeds. Allowing your flock limited time in the garden during the growing season also promotes w**d control, but supervise the birds because they’re just as likely to eat tomatoes or peas as they are to scratch at the w**ds poking out of the soil.
