While It has been over 100 degrees In Southern California the first camellias to bloom for me is C. sasanqua 'Hugh Evans'. Smaller flowers than when seen in the fall. It has abundant single pink blooms with twisting petals.

Camellia of the day is Japonica Fimbriata. This is an absolute gem of a Camellia but requires careful site selection to protect its delicate, formal double fringed white petals from harsh subtropical heat. Originating as a mutation of Alba Plena in China, it was introduced to England in 1816 and grows as a compact, spreading evergreen shrub. Plant it in part to full shade with morning sun and protection from intense afternoon glare. It can grow to 4 metres and it truly is a special Camellia.

The New Zealand camellia society has just had its national show and the winning bloom was Alfons a reticulata. Well done Lois Ranson her first trophy in 50 years. It is never too late. More photos to come.

Our Camellia of the day is Japonica Debutante. Debutante is a popular evergreen shrub known for its fluffy, soft light-pink peony-form flowers. It blooms heavily from late autumn through winter into spring, reaching roughly 1.5 to 3 meters tall, and thrives in partial shade or morning sun with protection from harsh afternoon heat. My Debutante opened early yet my sisters is just flowering now! Like all Camellias it loves a slightly acidic, well-drained soil. It has soft, pale-to-medium pink double blooms with a full peony shape and likes a spot in the garden with partial shade.
