Winter Car Maintenance: Batteries dead ? If it cranks slow or charges over 15 volts, it's going to go bad. If it floats (Cold) at less than 12.2v, it's on its way out. Load testing can be done at auto zone and will tell you if it's done..... Sealed lead Acid SLA batteries are most common. When replacing, get the Largest battery you can get that will fit.... Batteries are judged by their weight, not CCA cold cranking amps. The more weight, the more amp hours available for cranking.
AGM batteries: Absorbed Glass Mat, a hybrid to SLA's. Less lead plates and more glass mat. Great for low temps but not for older car charging systems. Things to avoid with AGM's: over charging, 14.4v max. Older vehicles 2012 and older are not set up to charge AGM's. They overcharge them, eventually ruining them. Excessive heat in Summer will cause the battery caps to bubble and compromise the glass mats. And lastly, buy a battery that's got FREE replacement for at least 2-3 years. Most new recycled batteries go bad months before that, so when replacement is necessary, it's at least FREE to replace. Let them pay for today's recycled batts. Option B, get a Solar trickle charger with cigarette lighter hookup. If the car's outside during day, could benefit a bit while you work.
Tires: With the brutal cold outside, it's not uncommon for the tires to loose air. The air actually is not lost yet shrinks because of the cold. When the weather warms up, it's close to 35 lbs. We do however, want to keep that 35 lbs all year round. Most that I've found where at 20-25 lbs, which where filled up. When warmer winter weather comes back, check the pressures again. They should be over 35, then let some pressure out. Under inflated tires give less traction, lower clearance of vehicle, less steering ability and mileage.
Oil: At least check once a month and top off with 1/4-1/2 quart. I'll keep one full quart in the trunk at all times. Brand is up to you, yet for diesel, Rotella T6 full synthetic. Rotella has a zinc additive that helps lubrication for quicker starts and it's been around forever.
Winter weather weight: Put those sand bags in your trunk for traction. Carpool whenever you can. The extra weight could be crucial to getting to your destination in EMG's.
Don't forget to bring extra EMG clothes in case of being stranded for a bit or have to walk. Or just stay home to weather it out......
