Not every hydrangea earns its place in a Southern Connecticut landscape. The reliable ones for our area are panicle hydrangeas like Limelight and Little Lime, which handle our sun and soil without fuss, and smooth hydrangeas like Annabelle, which forgive a hard winter and still bloom on new wood.

Macrophylla varieties, the classic blue mopheads, are trickier here. They bloom on old wood, which means a cold March can take out the season before it starts.

Call (203) 482-5253 if you are thinking about adding hydrangeas this year and want to talk through what fits your property.

Watering habits that worked in April may not be enough in June.

As temperatures climb, lawns and planting beds have different needs than they did a few weeks ago. Frequency, timing, and consistency all matter. Watering too shallowly encourages weak root systems, while overwatering creates its own set of problems.

Getting irrigation dialed in now supports healthier growth through the hottest months of the year!

May is one of the most telling months for a lawn.

Color variation, slow patches, and uneven growth are all visible now in ways they were not a few weeks ago. Some of it is normal. Some of it points to underlying issues worth addressing before the dog days of summer arrive.

Taking a close look this month makes it easier to get ahead of problems rather than manage them later in the season. 🌱

Foundation plantings take a lot of wear over the winter months. Salt drift, cold damage, and prolonged moisture can all affect how shrubs and evergreens come out of the season. May is the right time to assess what has recovered well, what needs shaping, and what may need to be replaced before the growing season fully sets in.

A healthy foundation bed makes a noticeable difference in how a property presents year round.

Memorial Day weekend has a way of making you see your property through fresh eyes...

Guests arriving, neighbors out and about, and longer evenings all draw attention to how a landscape looks and feels. Small things make a difference: clean bed edges, refreshed entry plantings, and tidy hardscape go a long way toward a polished first impression!

Lawn stress in early summer often starts quietly.

Discoloration, thinning in high-traffic areas, and dry patches that appear before the heat peaks are all early indicators. Compacted soil, inconsistent watering, and lingering winter damage can each play a role.

Catching these signs in May allows for a more measured response before conditions make recovery harder. 🌿

Peonies, allium, and weigela are all reaching their peak right now in our neck of the woods. Each brings something different. Peonies offer lush, fragrant blooms, allium adds vertical structure and a subtle architectural quality, and weigela brings color and movement to shrub borders.

These are plants that reward a little attention and give a lot back.

If you have been thinking about starting a lawn program, it's not too late. There is still a meaningful window to address fertilization, w**d pressure, and soil health before summer stress sets in. The right program depends on what your lawn needs now, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

The most useful outdoor spaces are the ones that can get use out of at least three seasons. Thoughtful design accounts for sun angles, shade, wind, and how a space feels at different times of year. Material choices, plantings, and layout all play a role in extending the seasons a patio or garden area actually gets used.

If you have been thinking about a new outdoor space, now is the right time to start planning. 📞 Call us at (203) 482-5253 to begin the conversation.
