From ash juniper to something built to last.

When we manage cedar on a property, we’re always looking for opportunities to put what we remove to good use.

Ash juniper makes a great natural fence post, giving cedar removed during land restoration a new purpose right there on the property.

It’s functional, fits naturally into the Texas Hill Country landscape, and is another example of thoughtful land management in action.

Manage what needs managing. Use what you can. Leave the land better than you found it. 🌿

The short answer? No. 🌲💧

Ash juniper isn’t stealing all the water from your property. In fact, it’s a native Texas tree and doesn’t simply consume excessive amounts of water compared with other native evergreen trees.

The real issue is density.

When ash juniper grows into a thick cedar thicket, the dense canopy can intercept rainfall before it reaches the ground. A heavy layer of cedar needles on the forest floor can also influence how water moves across the property and how much has the opportunity to soak into the soil.

That’s why removing every cedar isn’t the answer.
Thoughtful cedar management is.

By selectively managing dense areas, we can help more rainfall reach the forest floor while creating opportunities for native grasses, understory plants, desirable trees, and wildlife habitat to thrive.

The most “hated” tree in the Texas Hill Country might actually be one of the most misunderstood. 🌲

Ash juniper, commonly called cedar, gets a bad reputation, but it plays an important role in a healthy Texas Hill Country ecosystem.

Ash juniper is native to Texas, not invasive. It provides valuable wildlife habitat, helps protect the soil, and naturally grows alongside oaks and other native species.

The problem isn’t cedar. It’s when cedar becomes too dense and begins competing with the surrounding forest.

That’s why we don’t clear cedar. We manage cedar.

Thoughtful cedar management creates space for healthy trees, native grasses, understory plants, and wildlife while keeping ash juniper where it benefits the landscape.

Healthy land isn’t about removing everything. It’s about restoring balance. 🌿

A testimony from a Wimberley landowner.

Jim has watched his property transform through thoughtful land management and forest rehabilitation.

By selectively thinning the forest, managing cedar, opening the canopy, and creating cedar chip roads, more sunlight has been able to reach the forest floor. Native grasses and understory plants are returning, the land is becoming more accessible, and most importantly, Jim has seen an increase in wildlife throughout the property.

As a Certified Texas Master Naturalist and David’s father, Jim understands firsthand that the goal isn’t to clear everything. It’s to create balance and give the land what it needs to thrive.

It’s amazing what can happen when you give the land a chance to thrive. 🌿

After strategically opening this oak mott canopy and managing the surrounding ash juniper, the transformation has been incredible.

This summer, native grasses are flourishing, frostweed has returned, and sunlight is finally reaching the forest floor. These changes help create healthier wildlife habitat, improve biodiversity, and support a more resilient ecosystem.

Land restoration isn’t about removing trees. It’s about creating the right balance so every part of the landscape has the opportunity to grow.

The land always leaves clues. 🌧️

Evidence of erosion isn’t always obvious. After a heavy rain, look for signs like exposed roots, washed-out soil, rills, gullies, or leaves and debris collected in a line. These are all indicators of how water is moving across your property.

Catching these signs early can help prevent costly damage to driveways, slopes, retaining walls, foundations, and valuable topsoil.
