It seems some foresters have been lying to landowners and our landowner clients that Rene has retired in a misguided attempt to get them to sign up with them. I took this picture of Rene recently as he was leaving to go mark trees for harvest on a client’s property. Does he look retired? He just had a birthday. He is 72 years old and admits he has slowed down but far from retired. He does do what he enjoys more and less of what he doesn’t. At 72 he should be able to do that. Now he often says working 40 hours per week feels semi-retired!
I have worked for this company for 5 years and I’ll say the foresters here stand on a good foundation of integrity that put clients before themselves as fiduciary financial adviser should.
If a forester has to lie about their competition to get work they must not have a lot to offer. Integrity, honesty, high ethical standards and fiduciary responsibility to its clients is what has brought success to our company and it will fuel its growth in the future.

We humans love to give human characteristics to everything from pets to plants. There is even a big word for it, anthropomorphism. There have been some recent publications on how forest trees communicate with each other. The plants and micro-organisms that make up the forest have evolved over millions of years to take advantage of each other. The mycorrhiza fungi mentioned are in symbiotic relationships with with their host and each benefits from that relationship. It's nice to think that trees "communicate." There is some evidence that nearby trees will react to stress chemicals released when trees are attacked by defoliators. That is communication of a sort but not at a sentient level. This is an interesting article on the science of forests plant communities "communicating."

The idea that forest trees can “talk” to each other through a connective underground web of delicate fungal filaments tickles the imagination — but the science behind those ideas is unproven, cautions a U of A expert.

We here at SMFS are proud to be members and are proud to adhere to ACF's Code of ethics. We are fiduciaries to our clients and represent them as such. Selling timber is one of most folks largest financial transactions and landowners should seek out foresters who will look out for their best interests.
