Coal tar sealers were once a common choice for protecting asphalt, but they contain high levels of chemicals called PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), which can be harmful to people, pets, and the environment. Because of these concerns, coal tar-based pavement sealers are no longer allowed in Maine.
