I guess any way you can kill ticks is a good one.

They are as bad as I have seen them this year. I have had a ton of them on me this year. I take nh clothes off before I go in the house.

Can a simple cardboard tube help fight Lyme disease?

Tick tubes are one of the more interesting tools being used to reduce tick populations. The tubes are filled with cotton treated with permethrin, an insecticide that kills ticks but is safe for mice once dry. Mice collect the cotton and use it to build nests. As ticks feed on those mice, they come into contact with the treatment and die.

The idea targets a critical part of the tick life cycle. While adult ticks often feed on deer and other large animals, young ticks commonly feed on mice and other small rodents. Studies have shown tick tubes can reduce the number of ticks found on mice by more than 80 percent.

The catch is that ticks do not stay on one property. Birds, deer, squirrels, and other animals can continually bring new ticks into an area. That’s why tick tubes work best when viewed as a community tool rather than an individual solution.

One homeowner using tick tubes may help reduce ticks in their immediate area. An entire neighborhood using them year after year has a much better chance of reducing the overall local tick population. Like many wildlife management strategies, the greatest results come when people work together across the landscape instead of one property at a time.

Did you know the roots of American forestry were planted right here in North Carolina? 🌲

Gifford Pinchot was the first American to choose forestry as a lifelong career. After studying the craft in Europe, he brought his expertise to the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, where he managed the land for three years.

His vision didn't stop in NC. Pinchot went on to become the first Chief of the U.S. Forest Service and founded the Society of American Foresters (SAF). Today, every professional forester stands on the foundation he built.
