Most people never think about what is happening under the road they drive on every day.

But beneath the surface, there is a lot of work that keeps communities connected. Pipes, utilities, crossings, and infrastructure all have to be installed with precision.

That is where J & J Boring comes in. Trenchless work helps move projects forward while keeping life above ground moving too.

Pipe jacking is one of those processes where a lot is happening underground that most people never get to see.

At the front of the casing pipe is the tunnel boring machine, or TBM, which is guided with precision to keep the tunnel on line and grade. Continuous monitoring and adjusting to steer the machine left, right, up, and down to make sure the pipe reaches the correct location on the other side.

As the machine excavates, the dirt, rock, and other material underground are moved out of the tunnel. Those materials, called spoils, are carried back through the pipe, removed from the pit, and hauled away. Then the crew repeats the process, adding new pipe sections as the tunnel advances.

Once the TBM reaches the receiving pit, it is pushed through, lifted out by crane, and what remains is the installed casing pipe beneath the roadway, railroad, or structure above.

Ground conditions can be unique, unpredictable, and sometimes completely unknown until the work begins. That is why it takes a crew with experience, ingenuity, and the ability to think through challenges in real time.

In this line of work, you are not going to be bored. Every day brings something different, and every project gives you a chance to solve problems, build skills, and be part of work that supports the team.

It is challenging work, but that is what makes it exciting.

For the right person, underground construction can be more than a job. It can be a great career.
