A recent study ranked Charleston's drinking water among the top 10 in the U.S. for the presence of "forever chemicals" known as PFAs.
These chemicals are found in various everyday products like Teflon, clothes, and carpets.
They've been associated with an increased risk of cancer, neurological diseases, and birth defects in unborn infants.
While the Charleston Water Works claims the local tap water contains a "safe" amount of PFAs, at 11 parts per trillion (ppt) of PFAs, a third party study by EWG found 33 parts per trillion (ppt) of PFAs in the Charleston tap water.
The EPA says anything below 70 ppt is "safe," but this is a big gap in reporting from Charleston officials.
Experts say no amount of PFAs are safe because they don't break down in the body and remain forever once ingested.
You can take action to protect your family from these dangerous chemicals by getting your water quality regularly tested and investing in water filtration systems.
