Every piece of this house was drawn to fit on a trailer.

That sounds like a small constraint. It is actually the whole design. Wall panels, floor units, roof units, all of it sized so a standard flatbed can carry it.

Once that rule holds, the house stops caring where the site is. A lot two hours off the highway. A lake road that washes out every April. Forty acres with no address on it yet.

Most new home construction requires an easy site and a deep bench of local trades. This one does not. The truck gets there, the pieces come off it in order, and the building goes up.

The house that has perfected dual use.

The Avery Residence puts a full home and a serious workshop under one shed roof. The living side runs along the west wall where the light is best, with a flex room up front that works as a guest room, studio, or office depending on the week. The oversized garage sits on the other side of a shared wall that does double duty for structure and sound, so the shop never crowds the house.

Upstairs belongs to the owners. Master suite, office, and a covered deck tucked under the high side of the roof, looking out over the fields. That deck is the best seat on the property at sunset.

Planned compact, planned efficient, and it does the job well.

Stonewall Preserve, a Home dedicated to preserving the Prairie and respecting its heritage.

The home will be situated on an old pasture that was first settled and farmed in the early-mid 1800's. Since then, the original settlers moved on but they leave behind fingerprints in the form of old field-stone stacked walls, mature fruit trees and native grape vines. A beautiful prairie grew out of the old farm fields which will soon surrounds the home.

We rotated the house ten degrees toward the southwest based on location-based sun studies we ran for every hour, in all four seasons. Winter sun is collected low and deep. Hot mid-day summer sun gets blocked. Window placement, roof overhangs and the overall form all stem from one study. Efficiency and function drove every decision; the design came out of the function.

We will be using Northstar windows and doors throughout. Metal siding and roofing, with locally hand milled cedar plank as accent siding and trim. The large light fixture in the living space will be custom designed and fabricated by a local craftsman. The home will be built by local Amish, and furnishings sourced locally.

Usonia House will be general contracting this project. Jobsite photos coming soon. Completion estimated Early 2027.

The cheapest square footage on your property is the building you do not have yet.

The White Studio is a working photography studio drawn as an accessory building. A studio needs three things that are hard to get at once: steady controllable daylight, deep uninterrupted wall space, and an interior calm enough to disappear behind the work. All three fit inside a simple economical shell.

The same discipline works for a guest cottage, a home office, a shop, a place for a parent to live close but live separately.

An accessory building is the most affordable space you will ever add. It just has to be planned like it matters.

Together when you want it. Apart when you need it.

That was the brief, and the whole cabin followed it.

The main level gathers. One long room facing the water glass down the entire lake wall, and doors onto the covered deck when the crowd outgrows the room.

Then we vaulted the ceiling to the ridge. It opened the view, pulled daylight deep into the cabin, and handed back a full second story of volume. A loft lounge sits above in the extra space the ridge creates. Kids can vanish from the room and escape to it.

The lower level finishes the thought. Bedrooms and a rec room far enough down that a late night never wakes the house. Enough bathrooms that nobody waits for the shower

This is the Usonia Prairie House, and it is the first of something.

Twelve hundred square feet under one slope of roof. Three bedrooms laid out for three beds, two full baths, and an unfinished basement across the whole footprint waiting for whatever you need it to be.

Here is the part that matters. It is not built on site. Wall panels, floor units and roof units are made indoors in a controlled shop, then hauled out and set on your land. The house is drawn so every single piece fits on a flatbed trailer, allowing this home to be built in even the most remote of sites.

Three concepts, one hillside.

This lot falls about fifty feet from front to back, which sounds like a problem until you let it do the work. The drop gave us a true walk-out lower level, a house that sits high to the north, and a two level covered deck that puts every main room out in the treetops.

We closed the Dream phase with three complete plans instead of one. The first delivered the full wish list. The second fixed how the house actually works day to day. The third flipped the kitchen so the afternoon light lands in the living room instead of the sink.

The PHILLIPS RESIDENCE is a home designed from the inside out. Before the walls were drawn, we studied the family's daily routine, tracking which rooms they use the most and when, and let that data shape the plan. Everything revolves around two things: the gathering of a large family, and the owners aging comfortably in place.

This home truly embraces the fact that its form is an expression of the function of the inside.

This design is currently towards the end of Dream Phase, this is when the clients and I stay in close communication making quick design decisions, revisions, and new iterations of how their dream home will look and function. Once we have a final general floor plan decided, we move into the Design Phase.

CUSTOM LAKESIDE BUNK/BOATHOUSE

The Tepp Garage is a lake-side utilitarian bunkhouse on Pelican Lake: a garage sized for two large boats below, and a bunkhouse above for the kids and grandkids when they visit. One simple shed-roofed volume on a five-inch insulated slab, drawn as a complete concept set.

Two oversized bays contain the boats, trailers and all, with a covered patio alongside for staging lake days.

Upstairs is one open bunk room with a stubbed in plumbing stacked above the first floor bathroom. This allows for an affordable future addition of an additional bathroom. Upstairs is lit by a band of windows under the high side of the shed roof. It sleeps a crowd in summer and stores gear all winter.

An insulated slab, efficient framing, and durable cladding: an envelope that shrugs off north-woods winters without a fuss.
