MITA is deeply saddened by the tragic loss of two MDOT workers killed in a work zone crash on US-127. Our hearts go out to their families, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time.

Every day, thousands of workers around Michigan show up to build and maintain the roads that connect our communities — and they all deserve to come home safely. Every fatality in a work zone is a devastating reminder that more must be done to protect the men and women who keep our roads moving.

We call on drivers to slow down, pay attention, and remember that it is up to all of us to protect each other on the road.

Work zones are not just traffic delays – they are someone’s workplace. Someone’s neighbor. Someone’s family member.

We will continue to advocate for stronger work zone safety measures, increased enforcement, and the resources needed to protect every worker on every project across Michigan.

This year's theme for National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) is "Safe actions save lives." This means everybody. Every driver, every worker, every road agency, every time.

NWZAW has been observed for more than 20 years and was launched as a public awareness campaign to help everyone understand they play a key role in keeping motorists and roadway workers safe. This year, NWZAW is April 20-24.

What an incredible experience at the 2026 HCSS UGM Convention in Houston, celebrating 40 years of HCSS!

The classes were insightful and practical, the networking opportunities were invaluable, and it was great connecting with so many knowledgeable and passionate people across the industry.

Events like this remind us how strong the construction community truly is — and what better way to mark such a milestone. Already looking forward to UGM 2027!

On September 25, 2025, a dumpster hauler traveling northbound on US-23 struck the Crouse Road overpass after inadvertently leaving its truck bed raised. The impact severely damaged the fascia beam and deck, prompting MDOT to coordinate an emergency partial bridge demolition. The bridge serves as a vital crossing for the Hartland Township community, making its quick stabilization a top priority.

Toebe was selected to perform the emergency removal of the damaged fascia beam, and on Friday, October 17, Toebe crews mobilized quickly for the overnight closure and emergency demo. By 10 p.m., northbound US-23 was fully closed to traffic, and by 11 p.m., crews were working under lights to remove the damaged span. The fascia beam was secured and cut free, debris was hauled away, and a wall of temporary barrier was installed to stabilize the bridge. Thanks to efficient coordination, northbound US-23 reopened by 5 a.m. and Crouse Road by 8:30 a.m. the next morning.

Spotlight on I-696 Phase 2 Bridgework!

The project includes the rehabilitation of 58 bridges and the full replacement of the Church Street Plaza along I-696 from Lahser Rd. to I-75. Every bridge over the nearly 10-mile stretch of roadway is undergoing repairs ranging from substructure latex patches, disc bearing replacement, bridge deck overlays, full deck replacements, and everything in between. In the 2025 construction season, 37 bridges have been worked on, and most have been brought to 80% completion with the remaining work to take place next year. The primary challenge on this project lies in managing complex coordination within tight deadlines, with extensive bridge closure windows and complex maintenance of traffic operations.

Next year will bring bridge rehab work on both the I-696/I-75 and I-696/Woodward interchanges, which both include three layers of bridges and a total of 20 structures between them.

The project marks a full-circle moment, with Toebe having built many of the original structures and retaining walls in the 80s. Keep swiping to see the historic photo!
