Don’t wait for the first freeze to get ready for winter. Check your equipment, irrigation system and make sure you have supplies for any planned treatments. Take a close look at your trees and shrubs to determine if they are dry or damaged. A little prep now can help prevent (unwelcome) surprises later.

Did you miss seeding your lawn during the recommended August and September window because of all the rain? You may have another option.

Dormant seeding is planting grass seed late in the year when temperatures are too cool for the seed to germinate. (Late November through mid-December in Iowa). The seed stays dormant through winter and waits for warmer spring temperatures to begin growing.

Dormant seeding comes with both advantages and disadvantages. It can help jump-start lawn establishment in spring, but there are also risks such as seed loss, erosion, and unpredictable winter weather.
