Have you ever opened your heating bill only to find a nasty surprise? Most of us have at one time or another. Heating and cooling expenses take up 50%-70% of the energy used in the average American home, so you’re not alone if winter heating costs give you anxiety. Many elements can affect the energy-efficiency of your home. If your winter energy bills have always been high, or you’ve seen them creeping up in the last few years, there are things you can do to reduce the costs.

The best thing you can do as a homeowner to lower heating costs is to figure out ways to minimize the flow of air in and out of your home. You or a professional can perform an inspection of the condition of the exterior elements of your home in the fall and spring to note any problems such as wear and tear, signs of moisture, or mold. Not only can these effect your bills, but they can also cause damage to the structure of your home by allowing snow and other sources of moisture inside. If you have an attic, inspect that as well. If you can see daylight when looking up at the ceiling, then there is enough space for water to get through and your roof will need repairs. Nothing can let in winter’s freezing air like drafty windows. If you’ve ever walked past your windows and got a sudden case of the shivers, you know that improperly insulated or insufficiently sealed windows do a poor job of keeping out the cold. The biggest area in which drafty windows can cause a chill is in your wallet as your heating bills go through the roof. Older homes can be particularly vulnerable to window drafts. It’s important to manage your window drafts to keep your energy bills low this winter by utilizing these and similar methods. Your siding gets hammered by the elements all year round, but winter is especially unforgiving. Between the ice, snow, and frigid winds, your siding has a big job to do to withstand winter’s onslaught. Luckily, newer siding is up to the task. If you’re thinking about replacing your siding, Budget Exteriors can assist you with information on all of your options. Meanwhile, you can help your current siding perform its best with some simple preventative maintenance.

Before the Snow Falls

Before winter, check for any signs of damage or wear and tear to your siding. Depending on the type of siding you have, these problems could manifest in different ways. Catching these signs early and having any weaknesses in your siding repaired can preserve its life and that of your home’s structure. If you’re concerned about damage, call in a siding professional. They know what to look for and what to recommend to fix the problem. Since repairs and replacements are harder to do during the winter months, it’s best to get them done either in the fall or in the spring after the snow thaws. After heavy snowfalls, you may wonder if your roof can hold up to the weight of such significant snow accumulation without issues. The good news is that most roofs are not in danger of a cave-in. However, it’s still important to keep your roof cleared from heavy amounts of snow. It’s also essential that your attic space is well-insulated to prevent too much heat from escaping through the roof. These steps are important to prevent ice dams.

Why Ice Dams are a Threat to Your Roof

Ice dams are barriers of ice caused by snow melting on the upper portion of the roof and refreezing around the bottom perimeter and the gutters. As this melting and refreezing continues, water pools behind the ice dams. It has to find somewhere to go, which often means leaking into your roof via weaknesses in the shingles. If this problem goes on for a while, it can cause structural damage to your home. Large icicles can be a sign that ice dams are forming on that part of your roof. Knocking down these icicles doesn’t take care of the dams, and once they have formed they are difficult to get rid of without professional intervention.

To prevent ice dams from forming, routinely remove excess snow off of your roof throughout winter. Your roof doesn’t have to be completely cleared. Instead, aim to remove the top layers of snow from your roof after every 6 inches of snowfall that accumulates over a short period. Also keep your gutters clear of obstructions to allow for the free flow of water. Gutter covers or screens can help with this. Winter can be the hardest season on your house, especially if you live in an area like the Northeast. By taking preventative steps such as those outlined in this article, you can save yourself the cost and hassle of winter home issues. Holiday disasters and winter dangers can be minimized or prevented by staying informed and aware.

1. Chimney and Fireplace Upkeep

There’s nothing like a warm fireplace to escape the chill outside, but without proper care and upkeep, your chimney and fireplace can present a danger. Have your chimney professionally cleaned and inspected at least once a year. Otherwise, soot and other hazardous byproducts can build up, causing potential issues like excess carbon monoxide. An inspection can also reveal any cracks in the flue lining, which is a fire hazard. Always employ an approved safety screen when using your fireplace, to prevent hot ashes from escaping, and always be sure that your fire is out when you’re finished.

Keeping your chimney and fireplace in good working order are important. However, these are not the only potential causes of home fires, which are most prevalent during winter months. Read the rest of the article at https://budgetexteriorsma.com/common-winter-home-safety-concerns-avoid/

Your windows are often the last thing you would consider worrying about in winter, but they are not immune to cold weather problems. Issues with your windows can allow moisture in, which could potentially damage the sills or frames, and heat out, which can cause your heating bill to skyrocket. If you notice the following issues with your windows, it may be time to consider replacing them with new, energy-efficient windows. Winter is a tough season for homeowners. Your siding can be especially vulnerable to the snow and wind of winter storms. In general, vinyl is the most durable siding material, but siding can also be made of metal, wood, or fiber cement. No matter the type of siding you have, make sure to inspect it thoroughly before winter weather hits to catch early signs of impairment before they have a chance to get worse. If your siding is showing major wear and tear, it may be time to consider a siding replacement.

If siding is damaged, the barrier between the elements outside and your home is broken, allowing destructive moisture and pests in. It can also cause your heating and cooling bills to rise significantly. If you’ve noticed an upswing in your heating or air conditioning bill, consider insufficient siding as a possible culprit. When you own an older home, you’re likely to find drafts and other construction problems that newer houses don’t have. The wear and tear of wind, sun, snow, ice, and rain can diminish how the construction of your home protects you from the elements. Older homes also may have shifted on their foundation creating cracks and drafts, and old windows may have become thin over time allowing drafts to enter the home.

Older homes are more susceptible to drafts, especially around windows and doors, due to simple aging materials. However, you don’t have to deal with high electric bills all season long as you attempt to heat or cool your home. Here are some tips on keeping your home up to date and energy efficient, no matter the age. Read more at https://budgetexteriorsma.com/is-your-electric-bill-too-high/
