The house isn't badly built.

It was built perfectly for its time and just never updated for ours.

Just like outlets, a switch should never feel warm.

A dimmer switch running a big lighting load can get slightly warm, and that can be normal, but a regular on-off switch that feels hot means there's a loose or failing connection behind it generating heat.

That outdoor outlet is almost always on a circuit shared with other things.

String a whole house of holiday lights together, especially older incandescent ones, and they pull real power.

Add that on top of whatever else is already on that circuit, and it tips over and trips.

Then people keep resetting it and plugging in more, or run extension cords all over trying to spread the load, which creates its own hazards in the cold and wet.

It's not really about the lights.
