Hey there! I wanted to share some information about potential issues you may face with your roof with the upcoming snow, sleet, and ice before this weekend.
1. As shingles age, micro cracks and blisters begin to form. When water runs over your shingles, it’s normally moving at a rate of speed to ensure they glide right over these cracks and blisters. With frozen precipitation, the water will sit in these cracks and expand upon freezing and can cause extra stress on your shingles as it builds up.
2. Most of us in the south don’t experience too much frozen precipitation. Ice and snow sits on your shingles and creates a sheet that isn’t going to come off until it melts (obviously). As it begins to melt, keep your eyes on your ceiling or safely navigate up to your attic. Melting water can cause unnatural water flow on your roofing system causing liquid to backflow under older or compromised shingles resulting in interior leaks. Use a bucket or storage tub to catch water in your attic until your roof is dry.
3. Roofing and gutter systems can withstand a lot to protect your home. With frozen precipitation buildup on your exterior, it adds a lot of weight to your roof and gutters. If you’re outside walking your dog or just enjoying the sights, just scan your exterior to pinpoint where some of these problem areas may be.
Homeowners experience wacky leaks and issues when we get winter weather. The best thing you can do is take measures to stop water from damaging your interior, take videos and pictures on your phone, and give a qualified roofing professional a call. I recommend checking Google reviews when you’re deciding on a contractor
