Some of the best folks I know are farmers. If you have a high school or college student looking for a part-time job, you couldn’t ask for a better place to work. Now is when farms begin hiring their spring/summer employees. Most of the farms we work with are looking for part-time help. If your young adult wants to work hard, spend quality time outdoors, learn about growing and cultivating plants, come to understand the soil, and appreciate what a vital role farming plays in our economy, then this is the perfect job for them.

A seasoned gardener knows that what they do now will help determine the success of this year’s garden. Not sure what to do, here are five January gardening tips:
1. Don’t wait to order seeds, many companies sell out their most popular seeds early. Folks we’ve come to rely on are NE SEED, Harris Seeds, Johnny's Selected Seeds, The Maine Potato Lady, MIgardener, Dixondale Farms (onions), ChilePlants.com (hot peppers), and Hudson Valley Seed Co.
2. Look for seeds that are disease and drought tolerant.
3. To determine how many seeds to order, map out your garden. Try to rotate your crop placement for greater success.
4. Some seeds you should start now (zone 6), indoors under lights: onions, leeks, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, spinach, and peppers.
5. Reach out to your local farmer to see what starters they may have available come spring.

Buxton Hollow Farm Natural Products works with farms throughout New England and the Hudson Valley. In doing so, we’ve come across many organizations that are out there supporting the farming community. We have become corporate members of three such organizations and ask that you consider becoming a farm or corporate member as well. They are the Northeast Organic Farming Association, the New England Vegetable and Berry Growers Association, as well as Southeastern Massachusetts Agricultural Partnership. The workshops, conferences, publications, and fellowship that each of these organizations produce are of much greater value than you will pay in dues.
