For all my tennis peeps!

July 10, 1943 78 years-ago Yesterday๏ฟผ, Arthur Ashe is born in Richmond, Virginia. He started playing tennis at the age of seven, & showing potential, he moved to St Louis to be trained by Richard Hudlin, who had previously trained female tennis star, Althea Gibson. Ashe reached the semi-finals of the Jr. National Championship in 1958, & became the indoor singles champ in 1960 & 1961. In 1963, he became the first black player on a US Davis Cup Team, & in his career he would be on the team ten times, in which America would win three times. In 1965, At UCLA, Ashe led their team to the NCAA Tennis Championship. Turning pro, the Sumner High School graduate would become the first black person to win the US Open Tennis Championship at Forest Hills, on September 9, 1968. Because he was still an amateur, Ashe only received $20 a day in expense money. The runner-up, Tom Okker, who was a professional, won $14,000. Ashe would also win the Australian Open, & defeat another local star, Jimmy Connors, for the Wimbledon Championship. Receiving tainted blood during heart bypass surgery, Arthur Ashe would die of AIDS-related pneumonia on February 6, 1993.
