We're often asked if we clean homeowner oil tanks. The challenge is that you only have a 2 inch opening to work through and the sludge adheres to the sides and bottom and can only be removed by scraping it off. If you're having sludge issues the best answear is to replace the tank.

Just received this notice a few days ago regarding increasing costs. This one is for backfill but others will follow. High fuel prices will begin to trickle down in the form of fuel surcharges. Prices will only continue to rise so if you're sitting on the fence regarding your oil tank replacement / removal project now is the time to commit.

This home was recently sold. At a quick glance the oil tanks look fairly new. A closer inspection would have revealed they were painted and in need of replacement. Since the tanks were against the foundation's wall, the reverse side was not visible. To catch this someone needed to kneel down and look under the tanks to see the condition of the belly. In this case the deterioration would have been very easy to spot.

We get the occasional call from people interested in having us "clean" their oil tank due to sludge. For a residential tank you can never clean it through the 2" opening on top. The sludge sticks to the side of the tank and can only be removed by scraping it off. If your tank has this much sludge in it then it's more than likely old enough and should be replaced before it begins to leak.

Whoever installed this tank used multiple ni***es and couplers vs. a single length of pipe, probably because they didn't have a means to thread pipe to length. The fill pipe was not pitched towards the tank which allows the oil to flow into it during a delivery. By not being pitched correctly some oil would always remain in the fill pipe after a delivery. Overtime oil began to seep out of these connections and onto the insulation behind the tank. When the outside fill cap was removed residual oil in the fill pipe is clearly visible. After this tank's removal we were able to replace the wall insulation behind it.

Remember when deciding who to hire to install your oil tank, that the lowest bidder may not be qualified. Confirm that this is work that they do and that they have the proper tools and insurance. If they are resistant to applying for a building permit, let that be your first warning.
