KCRC crews continue 24/7 coverage of this ongoing winter storm event. Today’s single-digit temperatures (wind chill below zero) combined with ongoing lake effect and blowing snow make for challenging road conditions. Because of the blowing and ongoing snow, roads that have been recently addressed may look untreated.

At these temperatures, salt is far less effective and can cause refreeze on roads where it is applied, activates, and then becomes covered by more snow – creating ice.

Today, our crews will continue to mechanically remove the snow, using heavier concentrations of sand with minimal salt to provide additional traction.

Even on roads that look bare, icy patches are likely.

Reduced speeds are required to maintain control and navigate changing conditions.

• GO SLOW!
• Keep headlights on.
• Allow additional time to stop.
• Provide more room between vehicles.
• Give plows plenty of room.
• Keep children far from road’s edge.
• Park in driveway/off of the street to improve service to the road.
• Keep blankets, boots, hat, gloves, etc. in vehicle in case of emergency.
