Plumbing Checklist for Spring
As we catch our first glimpse of Spring it is the perfect time to check for hidden leaks and drips. Prevent costly repairs and save water by doing a few simple checks in and around your home. It is also a great time to familiarize yourself with the locations of all water supply shut-off valves.
1-Check your faucets, make sure they are not dripping.
2-Check your toilets. One simple way to check is to add a bit of food color to the water tank. Let is sit for a half an hour. If you see color in your toilet bowl, then you have a leak.
3-Check and make sure your flush handle is working well. If you have to fiddle with the handle, it may be time to get new tank parts.
4-Check water supply valves underneath sinks and toilets for discoloration. Over time mineral deposits, rust and even hardened caulk can make those valves hard to turn. Rotating them every now and then will help keep them in working order.
5-Drain strainers are a great additions to your tubs and sinks. These will help keep hair, dirt and other material from clogging your drains.
6-Check the hoses on your dishwasher and washing machine. Make sure they have no leaks and are properly threaded. Cleaning your filter on your washer helps keep clogs from forming in your pipes. Take an extra minute to check your dryer vent, make sure it is clean and free of debris.
7-Check outside hose bibs (faucets). If a hose had been left attached it may have cracked or split your pipe and could have created trapped frozen water in your supply pipe.
8-Check your gutters, drains and down spouts. Make sure they are clog-free and drain well.
Finding issues early can save you money as well as save water.
