Professional Circle Tour
The Conservancy was pleased to offer its Professional Circle members a tour of the Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral at the corner of Mott and Prince streets in Manhattan. The tour was led by Michael Doyle and other professionals from Acheson Doyle (http://adparchitects.com/prtfolio/st-patricks-old-cathedral/) who are undertaking the exterior and interior renovation of this 200 year old building. Tour focused on interior work, including the stabilization of the plaster ceiling and walls, replacement of the original electrical systems, installation of air conditioning and replacement of the heating system, lighting upgrades, reframing and re-leading restoration of the stained glass windows including installation of new wood sash and new protective glazing, installation of an elevator, and new restrooms on the lower level.

The Basilica of St. Patrick’s Old Cathedral is the original Cathedral of the Archdiocese of New York. Built between 1809 and 1815, and designed by Joseph-François Mangin in the Gothic Revival style, it was the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York until the current Saint Patrick's Cathedral opened in 1879.
The church was designated a New York City landmark in 1966, and the cathedral complex was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. It was declared a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI on March 17, 2010.
